Competency Test : Frequently Asked Questions
Are you ready - Do any of the below apply to you?
"I haven't done this for a while"
"I've only climbed once or twice"
"It might take me a few goes"
If yes, then bear in mind this is not the time for practice; Our crew will only observe and can not offer help or instruction, and we wouldn't expect a friend to have to show you what to do.
If you don't feel ready, be honest with yourself. You may just need a refresher session with an instructor or spend some time under the supervision of a competent climber before you're ready.
Note: If you have only ever used an indoor sport climbing wall and have little or no bouldering experience, we have a bouldering induction video, you can watch before climbing.
If you wish to use our sport climbing walls without supervision, we would expect you to either:
Be an active climber, regularly climbing indoors or outdoors
Have recently completed an appropriate climbing course
Gained the equivalent knowledge/experience through personal training e.g. from a 3rd party
We may ask to observe you:
Put on a harness
Tie into the harness
Belay a Climber
Lower a Climber
Use an Auto belay
Identify good/bad practice on some images
During the practical assessment, we would expect you to be 'Slick and Safe' i.e. you will be able to do all the above correctly, smoothly and without uncertainty, error, or prompting
If you wish to boulder without supervision we would expect you to either:
Be an active boulderer, regularly climbing indoors or outdoors
Have recently completed a bouldering induction or
Have gained the equivalent knowledge/experience through personal training e.g. from a 3rd party
Are you ready? Bouldering can be dangerous so, it's important you know that you know how to keep yourself safe and others who are climbing with you or, around you.
